Simplicity Pattern Co.'s web site allows you to view patterns and the back of the envelope for Simplicity and New Look patterns. With Shakespeare in Love there's been a flood of commercial patterns available for Renaissance costumes. Big Warning! Most of them are designed for Halloween-type events. The fabrics recommended won't last, don't hang right, or won't be comfortable for hours on end. The patterns were designed for people wearing them for one day for 3-4 hours not for those who need 15-20 days of use for 8-12 hours at a time in all weathers. They also weren't designed for wearing with the proper foundation garments that Renaissance costumes need. Work with an experienced seamstress to replace zippers and delete bust darts, which are two of the biggest faults. The patterns are a good place to start if you are aware of their limitations.
