Suzanna Hardwicke, Countess of Shrewsbury

I have been singing and playing out at the MRF since 1998. I started out with the Elizabethan Syngers in '99, but then decided to go full time with the Mayor Entourage in 2000. I was also lucky enough to be one of the founding members of DeCantus, a musical/improv/comedy group. I have had a BLAST exploring music and acting and comedy improvisation with this extremely talented group. I have joined the Royal Court now, and my new character name is: Suzanna Hardwicke, Countess of Shrewsbury.

Cheryle Linehan, Former Festie
Veronica Franco, the Mistress Claret of Venice

Been doing MRF since 1994, when I started as the supervisor of the late, but great milk and cookies booth. Joined Clann Tartan later that year and spent the next few years working for Beth and Charles Knutson at MacGregor games. After a couple of years working for the Emerald Lady, decided to try my hand at street and Veronica came to life in 2001. However, for those of you who frequent Drum Jam, you might recognize me as the "energetic" peasant next to the tympani!

I have been at MRF for 15 years in various incarnations and received a Unicorn Award in 1993. My current Character is Captain Alexandra Gray (you can call me Captain) Pirate er....Privateer Captain of the Good Ship Compass Rose. You probably noticed myself and my cohorts in high seas crime, Sandy Bottoms (Wayne Grimmer) and Spew (no last name...but with a name like that who needs it! Eric Breece) acting as if we own the place. Well, see we do....we just haven't picked it up yet!

listserve3.gif (1092 bytes) Gail Lofgren, Shop Owner ~ Scrim & Gimp
Gimp

My first year at the MRF as a participant was 2002 when my business partner, Susan Horton, and I (Gail Lofgren) opened for business in shop #465 under the name of "Scrim & Gimp," selling decorative finery made of fabrics and tapestries. We took the opportunity to move to shop #104 in 2003, a location near the front gate. Susan and I were nominated into the Masters Program with Artisan status in 2003. This past year Susan has decided to leave the partnership of Scrim and Gimp and I am still trying to decide whether to continue at the MRF or not. I am not alone in my love for the Festival, but am also concerned about the direction the Festival is going and not clear if it is a good business decision to stay. Not having been able to let it go, I turn to MRFfriends for guidance and support, at least to get any pertinent information that is floating around that could help with my decision.

I started festival back in 94 as a newby fresh out of academy, (remembering Gary telling me during Academy "this is gonna be a shock to you Sabra , but you need to be louder"). Stephanie (Mother Superior) was the one who interviewed me, and I absolutely loved her from that day forward, come to find out that on the street she would become my arch enemy (The Three B' of Sin: Busty, Black and Bottled Blonde) I worked front gate for Rebecca , and she nominated me for Best New Character. I fell in love with everyone I met because of all the unique personalities I got the pleasure of working with, and you all know who you are. (winks) In that same year I also tried traveling to the First Year opening Festival in North Carolina and got to be Safety Services Girl. ((yippee)) I think I'll stick to acting. I came back in 95 and bad as ever, in a good way of course, Unfortunately I keep on trying to get back again, but my moving back and forth from Seattle and or crazy work hours prevent me from doing so, but for all good intentions, I plan on coming back this year, and as usual waiting till the last minute to get a costume together. Got any suggestions?

Thomas Lowe, Former Festie ~ Main gate and wandering: rose cart from “Thatchentree”
Pedro the Rose Man

Worked at the Thatchentree Rose Cart from 1989 until 1994 and agiain in 1996 and 98. We worked in a small group and over the years became part of the street scene, participating in the usual street craziness and interacting a lot with walkers. I had a key role in many of the renfest romances, delivering flowers, songs and love poems from and for participants. Probably best known (and feared) as Pedro, “the armless” on my back using my toes to direct potential lovers towards the flowers. “Retired” from MRF when I moved permanently to Germany , where I work as a lighting designer and tech.director.

Bethany

Hmm...well, the 2004 season was my first out at fest. I'm looking forward to no longer having to answer to "rookie". I was Bethany, known by very few as the town herbalist and toward the end as the tree hugger. My character will probably change by next season with a different name and identity, but that will come with time. I also worked out at the joust track as a Sandlot Kid and had a great time screaming at people and dodging the chickens that sometimes invade the list.

Fred Lulling, Former Festie
Mephisto, Master Fire Eater

Mephisto the Master here. I started with MRF in 1978. Before that I was a "carney," on side shows and circuses. Also did my fire act in night clubs. Performed at First Avenue, as well as back when it was called The Depot. I think that was before Prince's time there. Had a hand in establishing the Gypsy Camp in '79. The Gypsy Vardo next to the stage was my handiwork. Was involved with the Spirit Mountain shows, the Solaron Festival, and the ill-fated Louisiana Medieval Faire. Along with Bill Wiard and Eric Feuk, did a frontier-type Medicine Show for about 12 years. In all, I've been a fire-eater since 1970. I've also worked as a stage hand, prop man, lighting operator, truck driver, ticket taker, groundskeeper, just about everything in the outdoor showbiz world except sound. That's not surprising, since I'm deaf. I'm proud of my MRF Unicorn award ('91, I think), and performance awards from the St. Paul Winter Carnival, National Assn. of the Deaf, and Society of American Magicians. You can also find me at the Carolina, Arizona, and Colorado Fests, as well as a new one still being negotiated. At MRF, I'm also "unofficial timekeeper/security/clown" at Drum Jam and started something of a tradition with a spectacular (always different) fire stunt at the final closing gate show. As I type this, I'm basking in Florida's "liquid sunshine".

Lets see now, ’98 was my first year out at fest and my character (at least the name) I've since decided, was very boring. So, next year, expect to see me out there as a new guy who looks a lot like the old guy. Anyway, my first year was spent mostly having fun in the privies (Hey! Get your mind out of there!) and learning the ways of the Great Naked Potato.

I have been attending MRF since 1996. After my wife got a costume, I joined in as well. I am at present a Franciscan Monk of the 3rd order. I am the escort and protector of Lady Christine. (My wife in real life) We can be seen attending shows and I can be seen outside shops while the Lady browses. We have attended MRF in the past 5 years at least 2 to 3 times a year. 2006 will be a record breaking year for us as we will have attended 5 times. And future visits will be on season pass. I try to take holiday from my regular job during the MRF run so we can be unhurried as we visit. Someday, when time and my employment situation permits, I hope to audition and become a villager so I may also see MRF from the other side.
