The Most Noble Order of the Garter |
Henry VIII and the Knights of the Garter, c.1534, in an illumination from the register of
the Garter known as the Black Book.
The Regalia: The collar consisting of 26 red roses each enclosed by the Garter
interspersed with 26 gold knots and having pendant representation of St. George and the
Dragon was introduced during the reign of Henry VII, probably shortly before 1500. The
Garter Star, a badge which the companions were to wear upon their coats or cloaks dates
from about 1626. The blue Riband with its Lesser George, a representation of St George
slaying the Dragon within the Garter was first ordered to be worn by Henry VIII. It was
then a simple badge hung around the neck, but over the years the neck ribbon has developed
into the broad band which is worn over the left shoulder, the Lesser George resting on the
right hip.
